Presentation

A trip to New Orleans in the United States in 2021, and the idea of forming the JJMN band was born.

The Jeunes JazzMen NeuchĂątelois Band (JJMN Band) is a young jazz band from the Colombier (NE) area, formed through the collaboration of five incredible musicians who all share the same passion: to thrill audiences with improvised rhythms. The JJMN Band also composes its own pieces.

The JJMN Band performs in various cantons and even in France. Among other venues, they have performed at the KVO Jazz Club, the Bleu CafĂ©, the FĂȘte de la Musique (NeuchĂątel and Morges), Kiosk-Art, the Ligerz Jazz Festival, in Morteau and at many other venues.

The JJMN Band also performs at outdoor events, such as weddings or parties. If you’d like to provide musical entertainment for your celebration, please don’t hesitate to get in touch using the contact details at the bottom of the page.

Musicians of the band

Aurélien Berset

Drums

Aurélien Berset - Batterie

AurĂ©lien Berset was born into a family of musicians and took drum lessons at ‘La BoĂźte-Ă -Frap’!’ in La Chaux-de-Fonds throughout his childhood and teenage years. He also studied classical piano at the conservatoire for two years. For several years, he was the drummer with the BEC (the NeuchĂątel Conservatoire’s student big band), whilst at the same time practising jazz piano and teaching himself composition. As an adult, after a long break and whilst studying, he specialised in jazz and resumed his drumming lessons at the NeuchĂątel Conservatoire de Musique with Luigi Galati and at the Fribourg Conservatoire with FrĂ©dĂ©ric Bintner. He also took part in several workshops led by Alexandre Nussbaum, Mathieu Schneider and Maurizio Bionda. Since 2023, he has been the drummer with the Jeunes JazzMen NeuchĂątelois and the Latcho Messengers.

LoĂŻc Veya

Double bass

LoĂŻc Veya - Contrebasse

LoĂŻc Veya used to play in a rock and blues cover band before joining a group in the canton of NeuchĂątel that blended folk songs, country and blues. This enabled him to gain a great deal of stage experience and to master the electric bass. LoĂŻc subsequently switched to the double bass and very quickly developed a passion for jazz when he joined the MVFR Quartet, a small ensemble from Moutier in the Jura. During this period, he also taught himself experimental music and free improvisation. He currently moves between jazz, free improvisation and experimental music through various projects. Alongside the JJMN Band, he can be found in the free improvisation ensemble Das Quintett/Le quintet, which performs throughout Switzerland. He is also an active member of the Biel-based association BRUIT, for which he runs introductory workshops on free improvisation and open mic nights for improvised music. Furthermore, he composes jazz and experimental music pieces, always keeping improvisation at the heart of his practice.

Robin Roth

Piano

Robin Roth - Piano

Robin Roth has been passionate about music since childhood. After starting out with the Thun Cadet Band, he was a member of the Klarton clarinet ensemble at the Thun School of Music for many years and played with several wind bands in the region. Whilst at secondary school, he developed his piano playing. After completing his Matura, he joined the Swiss Military Band as a clarinettist, then the Swiss Armed Forces Central Band, where he met saxophonist Adrien Becker and clarinettist Benjamin Moser, who both play in the group. His training at the Bern University of Teacher Education (HEP), enriched in particular by piano lessons with Willy Schnyder as well as courses in conducting and music theory, rounded off his musical and pedagogical development.

Adrien Becker

Soprano, alto and tenor saxophone

Adrien Becker - Saxophone soprano, alto et ténor

Adrien began playing the clarinet at the age of 8 at the Neuchñtel Conservatoire of Music. At the age of 16, he decided to continue his studies at the Neuchñtel Conservatoire of Music, taking up the saxophone whilst continuing to play the clarinet. Alongside his studies, he played with the conservatoire’s youth orchestra and took part in jazz workshops, where he learnt to improvise. After obtaining his amateur certificate in 2017, he underwent military service in the Swiss military band and then passed the entrance exam for the Armeespiel (Swiss Armed Forces Central Band). He has performed at some of the world’s largest military tattoos, such as those in Edinburgh and Basel. In 2022, he founded the JJMN Band, a jazz group from the Neuchñtel region with which he currently performs in concert. He is the band’s manager, overseeing concerts, booking dates, communications and the website. In addition, Adrien regularly plays as a guest musician with the St-Imier Wind Band and the Neuchñtel-St-Blaise Wind Band.

Benjamin Moser

Bass clarinet and clarinet

Benjamin Moser - Clarinette et clarinette basse

Benjamin began taking Clarinet lessons at 10 years old after being inspired by a Benny Goodman CD and at 14 years old switched his focus to the Bass Clarinet. In high school he took advanced music classes at the Gymnasium Biel. After school he was able to do his mandatory military service with the military band, which is where he met Adrien Becker and Robin Roth. The rest of his military service Benjamin spent in the Swiss Armed Forces Wind Orchestra, where he played highly complex modern classical music on the bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet. Benjamin is a passionate jazz musician and with JJMN has been rediscovering the clarinet as a jazz instrument. Benjamin plays with the clarinet ensemble Clarmonics and the Stadtmusik Biel and also likes to arrange and compose for JJMN and other Groups.
